Description
An alternative to horseback riding and hikes for the active guest who want to see new places and new things is mountain biking. As evidence by the increasing use of our bikes (and increasing size of our fleet), it is growing dramatically in popularity. It is still another adventure that lends itself to the family together or a part escapes, either around the ranch or on guided tours into the forest.
Biking Trails
These are the Rocky Mountains after all, and we therefore have some awesome biking trails and trips lead by our energetic guides. For those of whom this may by a new adventure, we access some wonderful four-wheel drive roads in the National Forest. These roads are terrific for learning the basic skills of this kind of biking. For the novice, we have some great single track that is non-technical, cross country riding and mostly DOWNHILL. Honest! For those who are experienced, we have a number of trails that will challenge and satisfy your quest for more and better.
Equipment
We purchase new bikes each year (selling off used equipment at the end of the season). This way we stay up to date with the technology changes and feel confident our guests will be on great performing equipment. Our fleet of Jamis bikes all feature dual-suspension and disc brakes.
The TotallyTerrificTerrain Park
Built with the idea that not all guests enjoy the aerobic aspect of mountain biking, Steve created all sorts of fun technical challenges without all the climbing for our guests to try out our mountain bikes. This is a great way to start off your mountain biking experience at Vista Verde, or to take it to the next level for experienced bikers.
The "Bone Totter” is the most talked about obstacle, but there are so many more out there to challenge the guest. The Rockpile has 7 different paths through it such as Devil’s Backbone and Shark’s Fin, which range from very basic to extremely technical. With spotters watching the guests, they start on the basic ones and move up. Some guest go out to the Park with Steve and his crew of guides and ride through the whole sequence over and over. There is a singletrack path that connects all the obstacles to make for a very fun course. Start small by riding over a few well spaced logs, then over the small teeter totter, then around a sequence of tight turns, then winding through the trees in the soft soil, then up the hill to learn about how to position yourself best to ride the whole pitch, then around the pile of rocks and back down to ride over the very narrow bridge, then up and over the very wide bridge . .. But some guests just want to go out and tackle that one obstacle that keeps evading them. And with the careful guiding and helpful instruction, by the end of the week most of them have done it.
Whether just enjoying the fun of mountain biking around the Terrain Park because it’s just that, or using it to improve their skills so they can hit the singletrack trails around the ranch later in the week, the Terrain Park has been a huge success for all ages and abilities. Come pedal with us!
