Description
Silver Falls Creek is one of the long, steep-narrow scenic canyons near the Escalante River and although you can hike as far as you like, this canyon stretches far enough to make a very nice three day backpacking trip.
What makes this canyon special? Certainly, the canyon is beautiful - named Silver Falls not for waterfalls, but for streaks of silver-like color on the walls. But what makes this canyon fascinating is the history embedded, literally, on those walls. This once acted as a particularly difficult wagon route and the canyon inscriptions date from the 1880s to the 1950s. (For pioneer travelers of the old road would be replaced by uranium miners.) Most famous of these is the inscription by George Hobbs, a pioneer stranded in the canyon by snowstorm in February 1883.
