Dozens of campgrounds in the San Juan Mountains are available in the national forests, weather permitting. In the wilderness areas, zero-impact camping is allowed without a permit away from trails. Be prepared for cold nights, especially in spring and fall, but the brave will find watching the sunrise from a high mountain pass fitting compensation.
