Description
This canyon is ancient, formed by glacier and kept deep by the rapid waters of the Cache de Poudre. This is a canyon, however, you may not be satisfied exploring at high speeds from the river itself. The terrain demands to be explored more carefully, by foot.
The walls of this canyon vary from green to bare rock - when it is green, it is very green, lush with pine. Most of the canyon, in fact, is green and gentle. This is largely not a canyon of sharp rock walls. There are a few segments, however, where the space between the walls narrows and the rock formations underneath the vegetation are exposed. These sudden changes make for beautiful contrasts.
Trails are everywhere throughout the canyon, not only for hikers but for cross-country skiers. Rafting is naturally excellent. Fishing is another popular activity in Poudre Canyon, and anglers are often rewarded with a healthy variety of trout.
