Great Sand Dunes National Park is home to the tallest sand dunes in the U.S., nestled at the base of the beautiful Sangre de Cristo mountains in southern Colorado. Over 700 feet high in places, the sweeping dunes are constantly changed by winds coming over the Rockies. The contrast between the tall sand dunes and the snowcapped mountain range behind them offers a unique view unlike anything else in the west.
Great Sand Dunes is located in the San Luis Valley in southern Colorado, roughly 150 miles south of Denver and 150 miles east of Durango. It's a significant detour from major interstates, but the majestic dunes are well worth the trip.
