Description
Located near Colorado Springs, Garden of the Gods is a "National Natural Landmark" made up of beautiful sandstone formations. Pillars and other interesting shaped rocks make for a aesthetically pleasing climbs and the views from the top are excellent. The tradeoff for the cool rock formations is that it is brittle in some places so be sure not to climb when it is wet. Also, there is virtually no sport climbing here and very few top-rope opportunities. In general, the climbs are great and exciting but watch out for a lot of them to be a little run out and have a high first placement.
There is a great mix of beginner and intermediate climbing at almost every crag or wall and there are some routes in the 5.12+ range. There is no entrance fee into the area but getting a permit at the Visitor's Center is required before beginning (they take this seriously and it only takes three minutes). Some other considerations to be aware of is that only red rock-colored chalk is allowed and slings should also match the color of the rock.
