Description
First passing through the desert canyons of western Colorado, where uplift has exposed the billion-year-old "Black Rocks," the river crosses the border into Utah and passes through Westwater Canyon itself, whose steep sandstone walls rise above the most exciting whitewater on the trip.
Side trips to petroglyphs and scenic viewpoints can break up the trip with some hiking. Afterwards, the river meanders gently through eastern Utah, with expansive views of the Book Cliffs and Arches National Park.
The route begins in Loma, Colorado, west of Grand Junction. Multi-day trips usually end in Cisco, Utah or Moab, Utah.
