Description

Past Potash the Colorado River leaves the highway, meanders past Dead Horse Point State Park 2,000 feet above and enters Canyonlands National Park. The high canyon walls continue to provide a marvelous backdrop but you'll experience more solitude being away from the highway and further from Moab. Trips on this segment generally require an overnight stay or two and, once you get into Canyonlands, free permits are required to do so.

About 1-1/2 miles above the confluence of the Colorado and Green rivers there is one moderate rapid, the Slide, which can get as high as Class 3 in spring. The less experienced may want to portage around it.

There is no road out from the confluence, so those in non-motorized craft must arrange for a jet boat pickup. If you want a shorter trip, you can arrange for a 4wd pickup at Lathrop Canyon (20 miles).
